Disability Coaching
Badminton is a sport for everyone, and Disability Coaching ensures that individuals with disabilities have the opportunity to develop their skills and enjoy the game at all levels. This program provides coaches, trainers, and educators with the tools and knowledge to create an inclusive and supportive training environment for para-athletes.

For coaches working with players with disabilities, it is important to keep in mind BWF’s inclusive philosophy of “One Sport – One Team”.
The principles in the Shuttle Time and Coach Education resources are applicable to ALL players, including those with physical or intellectual disabilities. In essence, disability coaching is good badminton coaching.
Badminton Europe is organising the following courses:
BWF Coach Education Level 1 Module 13 (Coaching Players with Disabilities) workshop.
This workshop aims to strengthen coaches’ knowledge and practice in working with the various groups that make up disability badminton. This includes:
- para-badminton (for players with a physical disability)
- badminton for those with an intellectual disability
- badminton for the deaf
It is very important to note that this module is meant to supplement the coaching practices and principles discussed throughout the Level 1 Coach Education manual. As such, the contents should be used in conjunction with the other modules and will make frequent reference to them. The module has been designed as an integrated element of the level 1 manual.
There are different possible formats for coaches to achieve a Disability Coaching level 1 certificate:
- Standard BWF Coach Education Level 1 course, extended for at least two extra days to cover Disability Coaching content and competencies. Successful candidates will earn both certificates at the same time
- Disability Coaching Workshop of two and a half days, where the pre-requisite is a BWF Level 1 coaching credential. Successful candidates will already have their Level 1 certificate, and they will earn their Disability Coaching certificate at the workshop.
BWF Coach Education Level 2 Module 19 (Coaching Players with Disabilities) workshop.
This workshop aims to build on the solid foundations established in the BWF Coach Education Level 1 workshop with Module 13 – Coaching Players with a Disability. The Coach Education Level 2 workshop is aimed at preparing coaches to work with players at more competitive levels, and the contents of the Module 19 – Coaching Para Badminton reflect this approach. Module 19 should be used not only in conjunction with the Level 2 manual in general, but also with the Level 1 manual, with particular emphasis on Module 13.
It is worth pointing out that while Module 13 is aimed at preparing coaches to work with a wide range of players (including deaf players and those with intellectual disabilities), the focus here at high-performance level is mainly on helping coaches work with Para badminton players. This is because deaf players at performance level will generally follow training for players without impairments, and the emphasis for Special Olympics athletes is based more on meaningful participation than on elite competition.
There are different possible formats for coaches to achieve a Disability Coaching level 2 certificate:
- Standard BWF Coach Education Level 2 course, extended for at least two extra days to cover Disability Coaching content and competencies. Successful candidates will earn both certificates at the same time
- Disability Coaching Workshop of two and a half days, where the pre-requisite is a BWF Level 2 coaching credential. Successful candidates will already have their Level 2 certificate, and they will earn their Disability Coaching certificate at the workshop.
Invitations for upcoming courses will be communicated directly to BEC Members.
