New regulations announced for the BEC Athletes’ Commission Election

Brøndby, 12 January 2024 – In a bid to enhance the democratic process and better serve the badminton community, Badminton Europe (BEC) is pleased to announce new regulations for the upcoming election of the BEC Athletes’ Commission. The election is scheduled to take place during the 2024 European Championships, encompassing both badminton and para-badminton players.

The key regulatory changes are as follows:
  1. Change of Election Date: The election date has been shifted from the European Men’s & Women’s Team Championships played in week 7 to the European Championships played in week 15.
  2. Simultaneous Elections: Both badminton players and para-badminton players will undergo elections simultaneously. Notably, the para-badminton player election will predominantly utilize e-mail voting.
  3. Term Limit Increase: The term limit for members of the BEC Athletes’ Commission has been increased from a maximum of 2 to a maximum of 3 terms.

The BEC Athletes’ Commission plays a pivotal role in advocating for the interests of athletes within Badminton Europe and the broader badminton community. The current commission consists of Kai Schäfer (GER) – Athletes’ Commission Chair and Board of Directors member –, Richard Perot (FRA), and Martina Repiska (SVK). 

The election procedure for the BEC Athletes’ Commission 2024-2028 is as follows:
  • January 10, 2024: Election date of 10 April 2024 announced.
  • January 12, 2024: New Regulations for the BEC Athletes Commission announced.
  • March 13, 2024: Deadline for nominations.
  • March 20, 2024: Deadline to make nominations public.
  • April 8, 2024: Deadline for e-mail voting at midnight CET.
  • April 10, 2024: Official voting at the 2024 European Championship in Saarbrücken, Germany.

Nominations for the BEC Athletes’ Commission are to be submitted to the BEC General Secretary, Brian Agerbak.

To be eligible for election, an "Eligible Player" must:
  • Be representing a Member Association of BEC and be in good standing with his or her Member Association.
  • Be at least 18 years of age and must not have been sanctioned for doping or a betting, wagering, or irregular match offence during his or her sports career.
  • Be an active player, meeting criteria such as being present on the World Ranking List at the time of election or having participated in recent major championships.
