Badminton Netherlands has decided to cancel the 72nd edition of the Yonex Dutch Open (BWF Tour Super 100), the largest international badminton event in the Netherlands. This event would take place from 6 till 11 October 2020 in Topsportcentrum Almere.
The Yonex Dutch Open is an annual event where meetings are held with top international badminton players, badminton fans, badminton players, volunteers, associations and business partners. It is also not possible to make it the annual badminton party, as we envision it. It is also still unclear whether players from abroad can come to the Netherlands and to what extent the audience can be present. Another factor is that due to the flight of the shuttle, there is only limited ventilation in the hall.
With the current corona measures, the overall organization, but also for example the transport of international persons, remains an additional risk and burden for drivers, other volunteers and employees. An important facet of the Yonex Dutch Open are the many side events that are organized, but with the 1.5 meter measure, the preparation and implementation is difficult. As a result of the corona pandemic, there are currently too many uncertainties, both financially and organisationally, to prepare and organize this event in a responsible manner.
- It is of course very unfortunate that the Yonex Dutch Open will not take place this year. We have weighed many matters and coordinated them with various parties. We have come to the conclusion that it is better and more sensible to cancel the upcoming edition. We would also like to thank all our partners for their cooperative attitude towards the decision. We are going to have an extra big party next year, said Hendrik Boosman, tournament director Yonex Dutch Open.
The Yonex Dutch Open will be on the calendar again next year. The Yonex Dutch Open 2021 will take place from 12 to 17 October in Topsportcentrum Almere.
