Badminton Europe Confederation (BEC) would like to wish Badminton Denmark, a happy 90th anniversary.

The federation turns 90 this year, marking an incredible number of years of service, which began on 15 January 1930. Denmark is one of the BEC founding members along with 10 other countries, Austria, Belgium, Czechoslovakia, England, Finland, Federal Republic of Germany, Netherlands, Norway, Sweden and Switzerland.

As one of the BEC founders back in 1967, Badminton Denmark currently has over 90,000 registered players and 700 clubs. Badminton Denmark was also one of the nine countries that founded the international badminton federation, which is known as Badminton World Federation today.

Through the years

Every year Badminton Denmark host the DANISA DENMARK OPEN in Odense, a Super 750 tournament, which the best players in the world attend. Just last year Denmark hosted the European Mixed Team Championships in Frederiksberg, where the eight best European teams competed to be crowned as the best European Mixed Team. Here Denmark won in front of their home crowd.

This year will again be a memorable one, as Denmark is the first country in Europe in the history to host the Thomas & Uber Cup. The event will be held in Aarhus.

From the President and Chief Executive Officer

In connection with Badminton Denmark’s 90th anniversary both the President of Badminton Denmark, René Toft and CEO of Badminton Denmark, Bo Jensen, had something to say about the anniversary as well as the new year with the big event, Thomas & Uber Cup coming up.

- We have only just started a new year and we can already begin celebrating the 90th anniversary of Badminton Denmark. In other words, we are lucky to be going into a whole year of celebration which, in addition to the jubilee, also features the TOTAL BWF Thomas & Uber Cup finals held for the very first time in Denmark. The anniversary of our federation will be celebrated throughout 2020, at our championships and events, and we hope that everyone will embrace and recognize these feats, says René Toft, President of Badminton Denmark.

- Passing the 90-year mark, our federation is despite its age, still full of vitality. Among other things, this is shown by an increasing number of members, a growing economy and a general expansion within all our activities. Besides, we see a continuation of Danish players achieving great results at international tournaments, and we are continuously able to generate and host grand events on Danish soil, such as the World Championships in 2014 and again in 2023, European Mixed Team Championships in 2019, Thomas & Uber Cup in 2020 and of course our recurring DANISA DENMARK OPEN presented by VICTOR, continues René Toft, President of Badminton Denmark.

Below we have a quote from the CEO of Badminton Denmark, Bo Jensen.

- Almost as long as there has been badminton in Denmark, the Danish badminton federation has existed.  On January 15th, 2020 it is exactly 90 years since our federation, today known as Badminton Denmark, was established. A lot has happened since then, not only for our organization, but in our sport in general. Unwavering is Badminton Denmark in its work to spread the sport of badminton across all levels, create great experiences and joy with badminton. It develops communities and continues the progression of the sport we all love, nationally as well as internationally. In 2020, we hope to do exactly that as we will be both celebrating the anniversary on different occasions through the year, as well as, for the first time in history we will be hosting the Thomas & Uber Cup, says the CEO of Badminton Denmark, Bo Jensen.
