Mathias Bay-Smidt and Rikke Søby have surprisingly won the YONEX Swiss Open 2019.
As the current world ranked number 107 pair, the Danes were able to beat the World Junior Champions from 2017 and the current number 19 in the world, Rinov Rivaldy and Pitha Haningtyas Mentari from Indonesia.
After 56 minutes and three tough games, the Danish pair had a reason to celebrate in Basel. Rikke Søby took the final match point (21-18, 12-21, 21-16), meaning that Denmark won the first final of the BWF World Tour 300 tournament on Sunday.
“We played very well today again, such as yesterday. We felt that we had nothing to lose, so we just gave everything – and it ended well for us again. So, we are just very happy”, Bay-Smidt said shortly after the match and winning the title in Basel.
First title for Bay-Smidt/Søby
At an ealier stage of the YONEX Swiss Open 2019, Rinov Rivaldy and Pitha Haningtyas Mentari have been responsible for eliminating Marcus Ellis and Lauren Smith in the quarterfinal.
The duel between the Danes and the Indonesians on Sunday did never get underway before. But now, after the match, the Danes are statistically leading 1-0 against the World Junior Champions from 2017.
“We were good in playing at the net and short shots instead of playing the flat game all the time. I think that made the difference today”, Søby said.
Rikke Søby and Mathias Bay-Smidt play together in Mixed Doubles since the previous YONEX Swiss Open in 2018. Today, one year later in Switzerland, they have won their first title ever together as well as their first BWF World Tour tournament.
