The Total BWF Thomas and Uber Finals kick off in Thailand on Sunday 20 May 2018 with the group stages. The prestiguous tournament hosts the best in world-class badminton talent, with the countries who have accrued the most points invited to compete.
Taking place in Thailand for the first year, this will also be the first time that the tournament has returned to southeast Asia since 2010, when it was staged in Malaysia.
The Thomas Cup is for the Men's teams, while the Uber Cup is for the Women's. China dominated the Uber Cup last year, overcoming Chinese Taipei, India and South Korea on their path to the top of the podium in the latter stages. Europe's biggest success in the 2016 Uber Cup was Denmark, whose team made it to the Quarter finals, losing out to Japan 3-0.
Denmark's Sara Thygesen is ready for the battle
This year, Denmark will start in Group C, alongside third seeds Korea, Russia and Mauritius. We caught up with Denmark's Sara Thygesen, one of Denmark's top Women's and Mixed Doubles players to see how she is feeling ahead of this year's championships:
- After the European Championships we have been working hard to be ready for uber cup. The daily practice has changed a little bit - so we are more devided in ladies practice and mens practice - were Normally its devided in singles and doubles. So there has been a different focus - says Sara Thygesen
- Of course as team its hard without christinna and Kamilla. But we still have the same goal - to go to the quarterfinals. After that anything can happen- also depending on our opponent. But we have a very important match on sunday against Russia - so we have to be ready and go all in for that match. My own goal is do to well and bring some victories for the team. Against Korea will be difficult - but we always have a chance. All the girls are excited to play and do well for the team and for Denmark. So we will do our best - says Sara Thygesen
