The 2012 European Senior Championships started today in the impressive Arena Armeetz in the Bulgarian capital, Sofia. Close to 650 players from 29 of Badminton Europe’s Member Associations have travelled to Sofia to compete for the prestigious titles in the 8 different age groups 35+ - 70+. This is the first time ever the 70+ category is being played at the European Senior Championships.
The opening day saw almost 180 matches being played on the 8 court setup in the Arena Armeetz (pictured) as well as an official opening ceremony being held. Gymnasts from the Bulgarian national youth team gave an impressive show in their abilities and local musicians entertained the many players and officials who took part at the opening ceremony.
The event was officially opened by the President of the Bulgarian Badminton Federation, Puzant Kassabian and by Badminton Europe Confederation (BEC) Vice President, Joao Matos giving each a speech to welcome the many participants, officials and volunteers.
The event will go on until Saturday 22 September where 36 finals will be played to crown the new European Senior Champions.
