With only three days to go until the big 2022 European Junior Championships finals, the pressure is on.

We are now three days into the individual event at the 2022 European Junior Championships that are taking place in Belgrade, Serbia. We have had upsets, impressive wins, and great performances as we get closer and closer to the deciding stages.

Østergaard takes out top seeded Buhrova
Dane Frederikke Østergaard is behind one of the biggest upsets so far in this competition. Top seeded Polina Buhrova, Ukraine, got off to a winning start yesterday against Estonia’s Emili Pärsim. However, Østergaard managed to beat the Ukrainian talent in straight games, 21-18 21-14.

However, Buhrova is also the number one seed in women’s doubles with Yana Sobko. The pair defeated today the Finnish duo of Sarah Asfar/ Nella Nyqvist, and will be playing against France’s Emilie Drouin/ Tea Margueritte for a spot in the quarterfinals.

2020 European Junior Championships bronze medallist Nyqvist marches onto the next stage, where she will be meeting facing Czech Republic’s Lucie Krulová. The two last played each other just one month ago at the quarterfinals of the EYOF Banská Bystrica 2022, a match that resulted in a win for the Finnish player who then went on to win the gold.

Important wins
Another EYOF Banská Bystrica 2022 medallist, Sweden’s Romeo Makboul, waved goodbye to his chance at repeating his success in Belgrade. That is, for the singles event, as he is just one win away from getting into the quarterfinals with men’s doubles partner Mio Molin.

Centre of Excellence Benedicte Silassen, Denmark, has also had a successful third day at the European Junior Championships, having won both in the singles event against Karla Henry, Belgium, and in the women’s doubles together with Maria Højlund Tommerup. The Danish duo will be facing Czech pair Lucie Krulová/ Petra Maixnerová.
