What would sport be without its supporters? This is the harsh reality that we have had to endure and get used to. However, the supporters made a small return in Denmark this week and it was abundantly clear that this is what the badminton world was missing.

While sport made its careful return around the world, the spectators did not. Although in recent weeks there has been a slow easing of restrictions and fans have been allowed back into venues. The cheering, singing and gasps at great shots or near misses were warmly welcomed back. The atmosphere and the strong feeling of togetherness this generates is priceless and something that we have dearly missed.

The Danish badminton league attracts many players from around Europe and beyond. Every season there is a showdown between the ‘Final 4’ clubs to crown the champion. It is a big deal and even featured on Danish TV. This year in Brøndby Hallen a modest crowd were allowed into the venue and combined with high-level badminton – it was a glimpse at a scene that every badminton fan craves.

The players need their fans
The players on court, many of whom will have gotten used to playing in empty venues, alone with the squeak of their shoes and the swoosh of their rackets, loved having the fans supporting them again.

Mai Surrow (Denmark & Værløse)
- It has been amazing. As expected, the crowd we have and the people in Værløse are some of the best at making noise and we knew that we were going to have one hell of a party in there. They never disappoint.

Selena Piek (Netherlands & Team Skælskør-Slagelse)
- Yes it was really nice even though we were far in the minority! But it was good having people coming out to watch us and support us.

Rasmus Messerschmidt (Denmark & Værløse)
-It's really cool, the setup is fantastic, there is TV on and a very special atmosphere, even though there has not been a full crowd, my team has managed to come up with so much energy and sound. It is so much more fun when you have the crowd behind you.

The badminton community hopes that scenes like these can become the norm and that the sport we love can have its fans back once again.

The final is at 19.00 CET Wednesday 23 June – click here for more information.
