We are underway on finals day of the 2021 European Mixed Team Championships in Vantaa, Finland. Badminton Europe together with Badminton Finland has announced the news that sees Europe’s biggest events return to the country.
Finland successfully hosted the 2020 European Junior Championships in Lahti and this week the 2021 European Mixed Team Championships here in Vantaa.
Today the announcement confirms that Finland will host the 2022 European Men’s and Women’s Championships, alongside which the U15 European Championships will be held in February. In addition, Finland will host the main event of the year, the 2022 European Championships in April.
-After two strong bids from Finland to host our two flagship events in Finland they were accepted. I think we have shown Europe that we can host these kinds of events in Finland under these very odd conditions and restrictions stated Jimmy Andersen, Deputy General Secretary of Badminton Europe.
-Obviously, in 2022 we hope that this will not be the case. One of the main reasons to bring these events to Finland is to display top-level badminton to a Finnish audience, so we are hoping that they will be watching from inside the venue as opposed to behind the screen. Jimmy Andersen added.
Ville Valorinta, General Secretary of Badminton Finland, is delighted to make the announcement and explains what it means to Finland.
-The news means a lot. It is at the core of our strategy to make badminton the sports phenomenon of this decade. So, this is at the heart of this direction, for top international events to be played in Finland.
