A big matchup in group five this afternoon is Bulgaria against Ukraine. The winner of this match would instantly become favourite to progress into the knockout stages.
Bulgaria took an early lead with Mariya Mitsova overcoming a three-game opener with Maria Ulitina. Next up was Linda Zetchiri taking on fellow left-hander Natalya Voytsekh. In two tight games, Zetchiri was able to make it 2-0 for Bulgaria. Following the match, Zetchiri reveals the extra challenge she faced during the match.
-It was a really important win because Ukraine is very strong and probably our rivals in the group stage. This was actually my first hit here because yesterday I could not catch my original flight. So it was difficult because I had to figure out my style of game, but I managed.
Asked if the result of Mitsova played on her mind, as they are teammates, but also competing to gain qualification for the Olympics this summer, Zetchiri answers.
-I am focused on my own match. Of course, everyone has to deliver for the team, so watching your teammates if they win or lose, it doesn’t really matter, because there are so many matches left.
