The news champions have been crowned

The 2019 European U17 Championships has come to an end and Saturday five new champions were crowned in Gniezno, Poland.

The mixed doubles final was a Russian-Danish matchup between Lev Barinov/Anastasiia Boiarun and Christopher Vittoriani/Mette Werge and the Russian top seeds were off to a good start.

The Russians won the first game 21-16 before the Danes bounced back winning the second game 21-19. In a thrilling third game the Danes came out on top. Vittoriani and Werge are the 2019 European U17 mixed doubles champions winning 22-20 in the decider.

- We handle the pressure really well, and we kept playing our game, Werge said.

- We are so happy to win, especially after such a close match, Vittoriani added.

Denmark and Russia on top

The women’s singles final was all-Russian. In 2018 Mariia Globuva, seeded two at the Championships, won the European U15 Championships women’s singles title, and in 2019 she won again. Globuva won in three games against Aleksandra Chushkina, 20-22 21-12 21-17.

In the men’s singles final Danish Mads Juel Møller, who is seeded three at the Championships, won in straight games against unseeded Sacha Leveque from France 21-15 22-20.

- The tournament worked out as I have been dreaming of. I am very happy with my performance, and I have had a happy feeling inside, Møller said.

Viktor Axelsen and Anders Antonsen have won the European U17 men’s singles title. How does that inspire you?

- They are top players in the world. I know there is a long way to go, but I hope I can be as good as they are, Møller said.

In the English-Russian women’s doubles final the second seeds, Anastasiia Boiarun/Alena Iakovleva, dominated against Estelle van Leeuwen/Holly Williams. The Russian women’s doubles pair won in straight games 21-10 21-13.

Golden Møller

- Our service situation changed a bit, and we were good staying relaxed and calm, Christian Faust Kjær said.
