The badminton event at the 17th edition of the Mediterranean Games is presently in full swing at Mersin, Turkey. Badminton is making its first ever appearance at thıs multi-sport event which comprises 32 separate sports discıplines and ın which 24 Mediterranean states are taking part.
Despite the high ambient temperature, players from eleven different countries – coming from three different continents Europe, Asia and Africa – are giving their best on the three courts at the Mersin University sports hall no. 1 under the watchful eyes of Referee Isabelle Jobard (France) and Deputy Referee Ivanka Pokorni (Croatia) as well as the competition manager Hakan Avcı (Turkey) and the BWF Technical Delegate John Attard (Malta).
The badmınton competition replicates the London 2012 Olympic format, with an initial group phase followed by a Knock-Out stage. It is based on the traditional two Singles and two Doubles categories; and this since the organisers, somewhat unexpectedly, opted to discard the Mıxed Doubles.
The initial two days of the event have proceded smoothly, without registering any major upsets.
