Milano come out on top of all Italian battle

Hosts Calvi Network BC Milano kept their quarter final aspirations alive this evening by beating fellow Italian club SSV Bozen in what was a must win match for the Italian champions. Milano had lost in yesterday’s opening round to tournament favourites Primorye Vladivostok but got their campaign back on track this evening with a convincing win.

Stand out performances from their singles players Wisnu Putro (pictured) and Yee Yap, who also doubled up in men’s and women’s doubles, were pivotal as the hosts cruised to a 5-0 win.

Spanish champions Recreativo Ies La Orden have all but guaranteed top spot in group 4. The Spanish were tested in periods today by Deltacar Benatky and the Czech champions look like they have what it takes to follow the Spanish into the quarter finals as group 4 runners up. Recreativo will have the luxury of playing Euro minnows BK Valmeira in tomorrow’s final group match while the Czech champions should have enough in the tank to beat BC Jonglenster into second place.

Tournament favourites Primorye Vladivostok have such depth in their travelling squad that only Ekaterina Bolotova and Alina Davletova remained as a partnership for today’s outing against Kosice. The Russians even introduced Vladimir Ivanov in singles leaving Ivan Sozonov to partner Nina Vislova in mixed doubles in the final match of the tie. With not one match of the five extending over half an hour the Russians are here to mean business after slipping up last year. Their 5-0 win today was as clinical as they have been in recent years.

TBR bounce back

Icelandic champions TBR bounced right back after their opening day defeat to third seeds Chambly to send group 3 down to tomorrow’s final match versus Club Sports da Madeira to see who will join the French champions in the knock out stages.

Chambly have been impenetrable in the group so far and from the outset the fight was always on to see who could follow them as runners up from the group. After losing 5-0 to the French the Icelandic club inflicted the same score line onto Belgian champions Bad 79 Anderlecht with Margret Johannesdottir (pictured above) leading the line for TBR in singles and doubles.

The 5-0 win was a must for TBR as Madiera inflicted the same fate on the Belgians and with the Portuguese also loosing to Chambly 5-0 it means TBR and Madeira go into a winner take all match tomorrow to decide who makes the quarter final.

In the three team group one, which is the group of death in this year’s tournament, Swedish champions Fyrisfjadern made their entry into this year’s event. The Swedes sent out a very strong team against Team Argovia of Switzerland and emerged 4-1 winners. Established circuit stars such as Eidestedt, Ruponen, Hogstrom & Fabbeke swept up the doubles points while Mathias Borg’s three game victory over Pedro Martins has been one of the performances of the tournament to date.

The Swedes now play defending champions Issy Les Moulineaux in tomorrow’s top of the table clash with both already guaranteed a quarter final spot. It is just a question of who goes through as group winners and runners up.
