Late in round two at the Swiss Open 2021 saw Germans, Mark Lamsfuss/ Marvin Seidel, earn a spot in the quarterfinals after knocking out the number three seeds.

Malaysia’s Goh V Shem/ Tan Wee Kiong, runners up at the Swiss Open in 2015, were one of the favourites to take the title in Basel. That is before coming up against the in-form German pair.

Lamsfuss/ Seidel played the Malaysians in New Zealand two years ago and lost in two straight games. However, this time they were able to reverse their fortunes and took control of the match, delivering a satisfying 21-19, 21-19 win.

-We are very delighted. We played very disciplined and it’s just a nice feeling, Seidel said smiling.

Pretty good tactics
With the fast reactions of Tan Wee Kiong at the front and the sharp smashes from Goh V Shem from the rear, they can be a formidable pair. Although today the Germans knew how to suppress this assets well.

-I think we had a really good tactic to keep really disciplined until the end. In some parts, we were struggling, but all in all, it was a really good match. Of course, we tried to put Goh to the back and give him a bad feeling and it worked pretty well, Lamsfuss explained.

In both games, the Germans found themselves in front. However, they were able to hold on each time. Discussing how best to cope with this kind of pressure, Seidel states.

-I think we had that a lot of time in our careers, so you kind of know what you have to do. Sometimes you get a little nervous but in the end, you just have to focus on your tactics, be disciplined and it will all be good.

When asked if this is the best badminton they have played. Lamsfuss thought for a moment, smiled, and then exclaimed.

-No! The best badminton is coming!
