Fighting until the end in Basel

Both Christo Popov and Line Højmark Kjærsfeldt fought in today’s finals at the YONEX Swiss Open. While the titles weren’t meant to be this time, it was still a strong finish for the two Europeans, who got through a week of tough challenges to earn well-deserved runner-up spots.

Popov faced China’s Weng Hong Yang for the first time and started off fighting hard in the opening game. But in the second, Weng found another gear, leaving very little room for Popov to score and taking the match 21-18, 21-3. It still marks a great achievement for the Frenchman – his third career podium finish on the World Tour in men’s singles.

Kjærsfeldt also had a solid performance against one of the world’s best, Chen Yu Fei. The Dane played beautifully and pushed throughout, but Chen secured a 21-17, 21-17 win. For Kjærsfeldt, this is her seventh runner-up finish on the World Tour. She will now prepare for the upcoming European Championships in Horsens – taking place not far from her hometown.
