It was a tough day for European players at the YONEX Swiss Open. Out of all the quarterfinal contenders, only two have managed to secure a podium finish after a day of top-level action.
Ben Lane/Sean Vendy, Toma Junior Popov, Julie Dawall Jakobsen, Mads Vestergaard/Christine Busch, and Thom Gicquel/Delphine Delrue are all out of the Super 300 tournament after falling short in the quarterfinals, despite solid performances and strong fights from them.
The first good news of the day came from Line Kjærsfeldt. The Dane defeated world number six and top seed Pornpawee Chochuwong in straight games, 21-18 21-19. It’s the first time Kjærsfeldt has won against Chochuwong in seven encounters, and the result secures her a well-fought medal in Basel. This is her best result since reaching the final at the Super 500 Canada Open in July 2024.
The only other European win came from Christo Popov. The French player stepped onto court with confidence against S.Sankar Muthusamy Subramanian – the same player who knocked out Anders Antonsen just yesterday – and came away with a strong 21-10 21-14 win.
Tomorrow’s semifinals will be played in two sessions. The first begins at 12 PM (CET), while the second starts at 5 PM. Line Kjærsfeldt will kick off the evening session, facing Canada’s Michelle Li. Christo Popov will be playing two matches later, around 7:30 PM, against China’s Li Shi Feng.
