An amazing week of impressive performances culminates in the first Super 300 title for Mathias Christiansen and Alexandra Bøje.
We’ve seen one of the strongest versions of the pairing of Mathias Christiansen and Alexandra Bøje this week. The Danish pair returned to the Gallur Hall, Madrid, where they did not have such a good run in the European Championships just a year ago.
“We did not expect this. We played here last year in the European Championships, and we played really badly so we were not super happy coming here again but it turned out to be our tournament,” said Christiansen about their successful return to Madrid.
The Danes had not reached a final since the French Open in October 2021, where they finished as runner-ups. However, this week, Christiansen and Bøje have faced some of the world’s best and showed a good level: “We have been in a final in a Super 300 before but we lost, so to win it this time is just amazing,” said Christiansen. “There are so many good players here, so many top 15 pairs. I feel like this has been a really strong Super 300 so we are really proud to win it with so many good pairs in it.”
Despite the slow start, the Danish duo made a comeback to win the first game and from then on, they set themselves as the leaders of the game. “We had a pretty slow start and they got a big lead but we kept our mind in the game and stole the first game. I think that we played much better in the second game. We stepped forward on the court and we delivered some good serves,” explained Bøje.
A great ending to an even greater week in Madrid, the sole Europeans in the finals could not be happier with their feat. “We have played really well since the start — from the first round and all the way to the final. We are so happy to step on court in the final and to win it, that’s even better,” concluded Christiansen.
