Toma Junior Popov has secured the best result of his career at a Super 1000 level by reaching the semifinals of the VICTOR China Open 2026 in Changzhou.

The Frenchman defeated Ireland's Nhat Nguyen in a hard-fought quarterfinal, recovering from losing the opening game to claim a 12-21, 21-10, 21-15 win and secure himself a podium finish.

Nguyen once again showed the fighting spirit that characterises his game but Popov responded with strength in the second and then winning the decider to book his place in the semifinals.

Reflecting on the match, Popov praised his opponent. "It was just about two guys fighting with their strength and just taking pleasure on the court."

He also highlighted the tactical battle that he thinks decided the match. "It was a really good fight. I would say it was the battle of the sides. […] I think that was the key moment."

This win marks Popov's first-ever Super 1000 semifinal and continues an outstanding period for French men's singles badminton. While happy with the achievement, the 27-year-old remains focused on continuing his progress. "I'm kind of proud, but I'm going step by step."

Popov also pointed to the recent success of fellow Frenchmen, highlighting the strength of France's men's singles squad. "Alex won Singapore, Christo won Japan Open, and I'm trying to find my way here in China. So, yeah, it's a really good moment for us and for France."

With a place in the final now at stake, Popov has his eyes on the prize in Changzhou and is taking another step towards the biggest title of his career. He will meet eighth seed Victor Lai tomorrow.
