After reaching the semifinals at last week's US Open, newly formed men's doubles pair Christian Faust Kjær and Rasmus Kjær continued their impressive run of form. Their semifinal finish saw the Danish duo climb 12 places in the world rankings to No. 39.
On Thursday evening, the Danes pulled off a great result by defeating the top-seeded American pair Chen Zhi Yi and Presley Smith in the second round of the Canada Open, booking their place in the quarterfinals. The match ended 21-14, 17-21, 21-19.
Although the scoreline suggests a close contest, the Danes were largely in control throughout the deciding game. They earned seven match points while leading 20-13 but had to save all seven opportunities before finally sealing the victory at 21-19.
Among the other tournament favourites to suffer an early exit were 2026 European Championships silver medallists Callum Hemming and Estelle Van Leeuwen. The second-seeded English mixed doubles pair were defeated by Denmark's Kristoffer Kolding and Mette Werge.
Currently ranked No. 59 in the world, Kolding and Werge claimed a hard-fought 21-18, 15-21, 21-18 victory to advance to the quarterfinals, which will be played later today.
Elsewhere in the second round, last week's US Open runner-up Kaloyana Nalbantova was beaten by Ukraine's Yevheniia Kantemyr. The young Ukrainian won 21-10, 9-21, 21-15 who earlier this year helped Ukraine secure its first-ever medal at the European Women's Team Championships.
Other Europeans through to the quarterfinals include Alexander Dunn/Julie Macpherson, Julien Maio/Léa Palermo, Samuel Jones/Lizzie Tolman, Julien Carraggi, the Grimley brothers, Julien Maio/William Villeger, Polina Buhrova/Yevheniia Kantemyr, Amalie Schulz and Line Christophersen.
