Popov has produced a huge win today, defeating world number one Shi Yu Qi to secure his spot in the semifinals of the Japan Open.

The Frenchman returns to the podium of the Super 750 tournament for the second consecutive year. In 2025, he also reached the semifinals in Tokyo, where his run was ended by Shi. This time, however, Popov got his revenge.

Shi won the opening game 21-14 but the momentum shifted in Popov's favour. The Frenchman responded with a strong display, winning the second game 21-10 before completing the comeback with a confident 21-11 win in the decider.

Popov will clash with Japan's Kodai Naraoka tomorrow for a place in the final. The players are tied 3-3 in their head-to-head, although Popov has won each of their last three matches.
