The defending Olympic champion Viktor Axelsen (DEN) secured his place in the semifinals of the competition after beating Singapore's Loh Kean Yew.

Having faced each other ten times on previous occasions, we have to go all the way back to the Denmark Open 2022 to find the last time the Singaporean managed to better the long-lasting world number one Axelsen.

The victory means that Axelsen is one step closer to gaining his third consecutive medal at the Olympics, after gaining the bronze medal at Rio 2016 and the gold medal at Tokyo 2020 Tokyo.

In the semifinals, Lakshya Sen (IND) awaits him. The Indian player has only managed to beat the Danish superstar in one out of their eight encounters. If their ninth encounter will be the second time Sen beats Axelsen, we will have to patiently wait and see to find out.
