In a statement from the German Badminton Association, they share the reasoning behind the cancellation of the German Open.
The city of Mülheim an der Ruhr acted on the recommendation of the health authority. The rapid spread of the virus is currently an incalculable risk for athletes and visitors, the organisers said. A shift of dates is currently being considered.
"After medical advice and a mutual decision process, we cancelled the event at the scheduled time," said Mülheim's Sports and Health Director, Marc Buchholz, explaining this difficult decision.
“Based on the current situation, the Mülheim health office recommended that the event be cancelled and postponed to a later date. We followed the recommendation”, said Buchholz.
Further information will be announced at a press conference on Friday, 28 February at 11:00 a.m. in the König Pilsener Lounge of the Innogy Sporthalle, Mülheim an der Ruhr.
This decision affects only the German Open, and not the German Junior tournament played in Berlin the same week.
