The English mixed doubles pair Marcus Ellis and Lauren Smith are retiring from their professional careers with immediate effect. Fortunately, this decision comes under happy circumstances, as the mixed doubles duo, who are also a couple off the court, have announced that they are expecting a child together.
It marks the end of two remarkable careers. Both players have achieved great success, both together and with their respective doubles partners. Together, their career highlights include gold at the 2019 European Games, silver and bronze at the European Championships in 2021 and 2018 respectively, and being crowned English champions in 2018. Additionally, the pair has won five titles on the World Tour and achieved a highest world ranking of No. 7.
In addition to their successful mixed doubles career together, both players have had impressive careers in men’s and women’s doubles. Marcus Ellis’ greatest career achievement came alongside Chris Langridge when they won bronze at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio. They also claimed gold at the Super 750 Denmark Open in 2018. Lauren Smith, meanwhile, won silver at the 2019 European Games alongside Chloe Birch.
Although the couple is ending their international badminton careers, their plans for the future are already in place.
“Marcus will continue to play and coach at his clubs and training centres around Europe. I will continue to create content and develop my skills and experience in media,” said Smith.
We wish the couple the very best of luck in their new life outside of badminton and in their upcoming role as parents.
