Lane and Vendy stun the world number ones

The third tournament of the Asian leg kicked off today, promising yet another week of intense badminton action. 

Ben Lane and Sean Vendy made a stunning start to the Singapore Open, causing a major upset by defeating the world number one pair, Indonesia’s Fajar Alfian and Muhammad Rian Ardianto. The English duo secured the win in straight games, 21-15 21-18.

Continuing their impressive performances in recent tournaments, Danes Mathias Christiansen and Alexandra Bøje secured a hard-fought victory against Singapore's Hee Yong Kai Terry and Tan Wei Han Jessica. After an intense battle, the Danes emerged triumphant, bouncing back from a first-game loss to claim the match, 20-22, 21-13, 21-13.

In yet another display of European strength in the mixed doubles category, France’s Thom Gicquel and Delphine Delrue, the fifth seeds, won against Hong Kong's Tang Chun Man and Tse Ying Suet, 18-21, 21-18, 21-14. The English pair of Marcus Ellis and Lauren Smith also started their campaign strongly, securing a win in straight games over Japan's Hiroki Midorikawa and Natsu Saito, 21-17 22-20.

A thrilling European showdown unfolded between Denmark's Anders Antonsen and France's Toma Junior Popov. The match went down to the wire and ultimately, it was Antonsen who emerged as the victor after a gruelling three-game battle, winning 21-16, 20-22, 21-19.

Unfortunately, reigning men's doubles European champions Mark Lamsfuss and Marvin Seidel will be missing out from the tournament, having had to withdraw due to a knee injury of Lamsfuss.
