Indonesia's dominance continues with their second win in the group stage as Germany fails to secure victory in gruelling team match.
Another tough clash for Germany at the TotalEnergies BWF Sudirman Cup Finals. The team played their second team match on this third day of the group stage and just like Thailand, who they faced yesterday, today’s rivals were not going to make it easy for the European Mixed Team Championships bronze medallists.
Germany failed to secure a win in any of today’s matches against Indonesia except for the men’s doubles. Just like yesterday, Mark Lamsfuss/ Marvin Seidel pulled through for their team to take the team in yet another intense showdown for the pair. After losing the first game, the reigning European champions came back to take the win in a match that lasted over an hour.
This victory for Indonesia places them on top of Group B. On Thursday, they will be meeting another strong squad in the group, Thailand. There is a lot of pressure to show who’s best. One of Indonesia’s stars, Jonatan Christie, got to play his first match in this edition’s Sudirman Cup and talked about the nervousness that comes with the excitement of such a big event.
“Playing the first match in a team event, such as Sudirman Cup or Thomas Cup, is very difficult. There is a lot of pressure because you want to show your best but there are a lot of nerves,” explained the world number six. “Every time I play in China in a great, big stadium, it’s not easy. Usually, when we play here in China, the shuttle is slower but now I think it’s actually fast,” Christie added about the conditions in the hall.
Germany’s defeat in their clash against Indonesia means that their journey in the prestigious competition has come to an end. Still, Germany will get to step on court one more time in Suzhou, China, on Thursday for a last group stage team match against Canada.
