Gregoria Mariska Tunjung got her first World Tour title after defeating Pusarla V. Sindhu. China took two of three doubles titles, while an all-Japanese match was one of the highlights of today’s finals.
After causing an upset by winning against the home favourite Carolina Marin, Gregoria Mariska Tunjung faced two-time Olympic medallist Pusarla V. Sindhu.
The Indonesian player gave no chances to the player from India, winning the final in straight games, 21-8 21-8. This title is the first World Tour title for Tunjung, having only finished as runner-up before — last year in the Australian Open.
A thrilling all-Japanese final
Madrid witnessed yet another class performance in the all-Japanese men’s singles final. After losing the first game, Kenta Nishimoto made quite the comeback against Kanta Tsuneyama in a thrilling match that saw him taking the match to three games and winning the title, 15-21, 21-18, 21-19.
China wins two titles
After the Danes took the first win of the day in the mixed doubles, the following doubles titles to be fought for went to China. In women’s doubles, two pairs from the same country faced each other in yet another long show. Liu Sheng Shu/ Tan Ning defeated Chen Fang Hui/ Du Yue, 21-8, 16-21, 21-18.
He Ji Ting/ Zhou Hao Dong, this year’s runner-ups at the Indonesia Masters, had to wave goodbye to the All England in the semifinals just a few weeks ago. However, the Chinese duo took it all the way this time in Madrid. He/ Zhou won against Fang-Chih Lee/ Fang-Jen Lee, Chinese Taipei, 21-5 21-12.
