Some European athletes already had the chance to perform today on the first day of the PRINCESS SIRIVANNAVARI Thailand Masters 2023.
Kate Frost, from Ireland, won her match in the women’s singles qualification beating Yeung Sum Yee (Hong Kong). Frost’s performance was strong, and she will play in the first round of the main draw against Belgium’s Lianne Tan. However, this was not the only match of the day for the Irish athlete. Frost also competed in women’s doubles with her partner Moya Ryan. Only this time, Frost and Ryan lost against China’s Li Wen Mei/ Liu Xuan Xuan.
Julien Carraggi, from Belgium, played in the qualification round and lost 13-21 11-21, against Japan’s Riku Hatano. Following, Felix Burestedt (Sweden) also fought for a spot in the main draw, but his opponent Su Li Yang (TPE) was stronger and won 23-21, 15-21, 21-12.
The last European in the qualification, Magnus Johannesen (Denmark) faced Christian Adinata (Indonesia) for the second time, the first being last year at the Italian International. Same as the first encounter, Johannesen couldn’t defeat Adinata and lost 11-21 18-21.
Withdrawals
Unfortunately several of the European top players have withdrawn from the Thailand Masters. Jenny Moore/ Gregory Mairs (England), Alexandra Bøje/ Mathias Christiansen (Denmark), Carolina Marín (Spain) and Jeppe Bay/ Lasse Mølhede (Denmark) all pulled out of the competition before it began. Lasse Mølhede shared on his Instagram feed: “Unfortunately we haven’t participated in Asia the last couple of weeks due to Jeppe’s injury in his hand. I would have enjoyed playing all the tournaments, but we have to wait until next time”.
