After a busy week at the Malaysia Open, we are already at day two of the YONEX SUNRISE India Open 2023. The HSBC BWF World Tour Super 750 tournament is held in New Delhi from 17 until 22 January.
In the seeded entries, we can find some European players: Viktor Axelsen, who secured the title at the Malaysia Open, the 2018’s India Open silver medalists Kim Astrup/ Anders Rasmussen, and Thom Gicquel/ Delphine Delrue are amongst some of the strongest players representing Europe.
Wednesday's action started with some exciting matches. Anders Antonsen (Denmark) played against Toma Junior Popov (France) and won the three-game match 18-21, 21-19, 21-13. In the next round, Antonsen will face Kunlavut Vitidsarn from Thailand. Toma Junior Popov had a second chance later today with his brother Christo Popov in men’s doubles. Unfortunately the French lost against Jomkoh/Kedren (Thailand) after a strong fight 27-29, 14-21.
Mark Lamsfuss and Marvin Seidel (Germany) faced Ko Sung Hyun and Shin Baek Cheol (Korea) and won 21-13 21-18. In the next round the European Champions will play against Kim Astrup and Anders Rasmussen (Denmark), who won against the French pair Lucas Corvee/ Ronan Labar 21-10 21-11, in what is promising to be an exciting battle.
Denmark’s Hans-Kristian Vittinghus played against Malaysia’s Liew Daren, who retired in the first game due to an injury. Vittinghus was leading the match 11-9 and now his next opponent will be last year’s runner-up, Loh Kean Yew from Singapore.
World’s number one Viktor Axelsen faced Kidambi Srikanth, from India. In the second game, the Dane was trailing 5-14 but still managed to win 21-14 21-19. Shi Yu Qi (China) will be his adversary in the next round.
Denmark took another win in the morning, as Mathias Christiansen and Alexandra Bøje also won their opening match 21-10 21-17 and will be playing again in the round of 16.

Yesterday's wrap up
On Tuesday, the first players were stepping on court at the India Open. Rasmus Gemke, from Denmark, won his match against Japan’s Kento Momota and is playing in the round of 16 versus Lakshya Sen, from India.
The mixed doubles pair Thom Gicquel and Delphine Delrue (France) also won their match against Lee Reginald and Ng Tsz Yau (Hong Kong) and will be playing again on Thursday.
Gabriela Stoeva and Stefani Stoeva (Bulgaria), who faced Chloe Birch and Lauren Smith (England), won 21-16 21-10 and will play versus Jongkolphan Kititharakul and Rawinda Prajongjai (Thailand) in the round of 16.
Linda Efler/ Isabel Lohau, Carolina Marín, Robin Tabeling/ Selena Piek, and Kirsty Gilmour also secured their place in the second round.
