One of Poland’s biggest cities, Lodz, will be hosting the multi-sport event from 17 to 30 of July where badminton talents from European universities will get to compete in team and individual events.
The European Universities Games (EUG) are back. The major university multi-sport event, governed by the European University Sports Association (EUSA), will take place in Lodz, Poland from 17 to 30 of July.
The biggest university sports event is back
The last edition took place in Coimbra, Portugal in 2018. Its fifth edition was to be held in Belgrade, Serbia in 2020 for its fifth edition. After the postponement to 2021 due to the COVID-19 outbreak and its subsequent cancellation, EUSA is proud to announce that university athletes will get to compete this year.
The announcement of this year’s host city was announced back in 2018 in Madrid at the EUSA General Assembly. Registration for what will be the biggest university sport event organised in Poland since the Winter Universiade in 2001 opened in December 2021 and will be closing on 15 March.

Badminton, a key part of the event
Badminton Europe and EUSA have been working closely for years now, having been official partners since 2015, when a Memorandum of Understanding was signed between the two organisations. EUSA President Adam Roczek has expressed his positive feelings when it comes to badminton taking part in their main event.
- EUSA is excited to see badminton being part of the European Universities Games in Lodz 2022 as one of the core sports on the programme.
Badminton is one of the 20 disciplines at the European University Games, contributing to the around 5000 students expected to represent over 400 European universities from 40 different countries. The badminton competition, which will consist of individual and team events, is to take place from 25 to 30 July.
Poland, an experienced host
The official venue where academic badminton players will compete for the universities they represent will be the modern multisport centre Zatoka Sports Hall, part of the TUL Sports and Education Centre “Sports Bay”. Sports Bay is an organisational unit of Lodz University of Technology, a renowned university that is one of the biggest technical universities in Poland and the only Polish university to have joined the elite network of European universities.
- We are also excited to see the EUSA badminton event come back again to Poland, especially as the inaugural European Universities Badminton Championship was held in Krakow in 2004. Poland welcomed university badminton players from all over Europe several times since then, the last time in Lodz in 2019, Roczek stated.
An unforgettable experience
Centre of Excellence player Anna Mikhalkova, from Ukraine, took part in the last edition of the EUG. She represented the National Technical University "Kharkiv Polytechnical Institute" where, at the time, she was studying Physical Education and Sports Science. The Ukrainian player has fond memories of the event that took place in Coimbra, Portugal.
- It was super cool to participate in a big multisport event and see so many students from all around Europe. We also met some girls from the Ukrainian 3x3 team, it was fun to watch them playing and supporting the team.
