Kento Momota advances onto the next round in Germany with a win against Shi Yu Qi, who he lost to in the first round of the Indonesian Masters.

Long and exciting day ahead at the YONEX German Open 2023. While Europeans such as Toma Junior Popov, Jan Louda, and Lianne Tan have fallen short to win today, there are still many matches to come for more strong European players to advance to the Round of 16.

After all, the Super 300 tournament is a place of tough competition against the world’s best such as Kento Momota. After failing to make it past the first round at the YONEX SUNRISE India Open 2023 and DAIHATSU Indonesia Masters 2023, the Japanese player got to have a rematch against the player that beat him in the latter.

Momota did not give much of a chance to China’s Shi Yu Qi this time, only needing two games to win, 21-18 21-7. “I lost to Shi in the Indonesia Masters in January quite easily, that’s why I tried to play well against him and just catch all the shuttles, that was my plan today,” stated the Japanese player.

His next match in Mülheim will be against Canada’s Brian Yang who has just defeated Toma Junior Popov today in straight games and had a better run in the Indonesia Masters, having reached the quarterfinals. So, what is Momota’s plan for tomorrow’s clash? “Same as today, I’m just taking it match by match, trying to win,” replied the Japanese player.
