After a very good start at their home tournament, there are no German men’s singles players left in the competition. However, the European mixed doubles were off to a good start.

Qualification stage

Kai Schaefer, who won his first match of the day earlier in the morning in just 17 minutes, couldn’t keep the pace this time and lost to Magnus Johannesen. Schaefer and Johannesen, which are separated by only one spot in the world raking, faced each other for the first time today. With a close result in the first game, the Danish player managed to win 21-11 in the second, securing his win in straight games.

Samuel Hsiao faced Jan Louda, from the Czech Republic. They had played each other three times before and Louda managed to win every time so far, even though their last encounter at the Hungarian International 2022 went to three games. Today, at the German Open 2023, the athletes’ one-hour-long match also went to three games but Louda still took the win 21-16, 16-21, 21-13.

The main draw has started

The mixed doubles pair Linda Efler/ Jones Jansen faced Po-Hsuan Yang/ Ling Hu (Chinese Taipei) in the first round and put up a great fight. In the end the Germans lost 20-22, 21-16, 21-10 but were quite happy with their performance: "The first game was quite a good one and we got the attack a lot in the second, but we were a little too passive in the third one", said Lina Efler and Jones Jansen added: "I think it was 50:50 and it was a lot of fun that we could show our good performance. We are looking forward to All England next week".

Another German pair managed to win the opening round: Mark Lamsfuss and Isabel Lohau had an easier draw than their countrymen and beat Mammeri/Mammeri from Algeria 21-10 and 21-11. "We are happy with this outcome and that we won our first round here in Mülheim", said Mark Lamsfuss.

With Thom Gicquel and Delphine Delrue (France) as well as Adam Hall and Julie Macpherson (Scotland) we have two more European pairs that won their opener today and there will be four more that start into the tournament tomorrow.
