Chinese Taipei takes home a total of eight medals, proving to have a successful team in the Slovenian tournament, while the host country got to secure a spot on one of the category’s podium.

We are almost halfway through the year and this month, we’ve had one tournament every week in the European Circuit. Last week, it was Slovenia’s turn with the I FEEL SLOVENIA YONEX International 2022.

A surprise from Austria
Collins Valentine Filimon only played his first international tournament of the year a week prior to competing in Slovenia at the YONEX Luxembourg Open, where he lost on the first round. Here, however, Filimon got to take the gold. It was a thrilling final that went to three games, but he got to secure the win against Lin Kuan-Ting. This week, the champion will be playing in the country that he represents, the Austrian Open.

This was Lin’s first international tournament on European soil in two years. He was almost stopped in semifinals by fellow Chinese Taipei player Chia Hao Lee, who ended up winning one of the bronze medals, while the other went to Lu Chia Hung, another player from Chinese Taipei.

This country’s team would have taken all the medals in the men’s doubles category if it weren’t for Denmark’s William Kryger Boe/ Christian Faust Kjær. The Danish pair were the event’s runner-ups last year. Yet, this time they had to settle for the bronze. They faced another Danish pair Rasmus Espersen/ Kristian Kræmer, a tough quarterfinal encounter that went to three games, and then lost in their match against Wi Chun Wei/ Wu Guan Xun, who went on to win the event.

Gold for a Danish pair
Another Danish duo that did well was that of Kristian Kræmer/ Amalie Cecilie Kudsk. The pair won the mixed doubles gold. Kræmer/ Kudsk took out home favourites Miha Ivanič/ Petra Polanc in the quarterfinals and had to face Rafli Ramanda/ Az-Azahra Putri Dania in the final. The Danes sealed the deal in straight games.

Serbia’s Mihajlo Tomic/ Andjela Vitman won the bronze, just like Italy’s Gianmarco Bailetti/ Martina Corsini. This was not Corsini’s only medal, as she also won the silver in women’s doubles together with Judith Mair. The Italian top seeded pair, who also participated in the European Championships, had a tough fight against Chinese Taipei’s Chang Ching Hui/ Lee Chih Chen but secured the win to book their spot in the final.

In the same category, Rachel Andrew/ Sarah Sidebottom, Scotland, only played their opening match to then get two walkovers that took them straight into the semifinals where they had to face Indonesia’s Meilysa Trias Puspita Sari/ Rachel Allessya Rose, who would go on to become the champions.
