The Thomas Cup campaign has proven to be a mixed bag for the European badminton powerhouses. Day three is on, but we look back at what's happened so far.

With India turning up with their most well-rounded and strongest squad in a long time, the nation has been touted as the dark horse of the Thomas Cup 2022. Having been drawn along with Chinese Taipei as well in Group C, Germany has already suffered two 5-0 losses. Their star player, the recently crowned double European champion Mark Lamsfuss is unfortunately missing to spearhead the team.

Germany is out
While Kai Schaefer and Jones Ralfy Jansen/ Marvin Seidel both took a game off the Indians yesterday, it was a better fight against the Chinese Taipei squad today. Four out of five matches went the full distance. However, despite being out of the tournament, Germany is expected to have a consolation win over Canada.

The former champions
Denmark was one of the hot favourites in the last edition. However, the powerhouse fell in the semifinals in front of their home crowd to Indonesia. The 2016 champions are ready for revenge as they seek another title. In perhaps one of the most lopsided tie of the tournament, none of the Danish athletes took even half an hour against their Algerian counterparts.

Up next will be tougher opposition in form of France and China.

Heart on the sleeve
With two extremely talented young teams facing each other, the French athletes wore hearts on their sleeves as they went down 5-0 fighting the mighty Chinese. In one of the longest men’s singles matches in recent years, Christo Popov left everything on the court. Despite leading 15-11 in the decider, he squandered ten straight points to Lu Guangzu. He stood heartbroken after two hours of titanic duel, losing 25-23, 24-26, 21-15. He also took a game off Liu Yuchen/ Ou Xuan Yi in men’s doubles, partnering with Toma Junior Popov.

Alex Lanier also gave a good fight, eventually being outplayed by the Chinese hope Li Shifeng 21-14, 21-14.

English go down fighting
Having been drawn with the likes of Japan and Malaysia in Group D, the English players gave a good account of themselves in the opening duel. While Ben Lane/ Sean Vendy made things difficult for the Olympic bronze medallists Aaron Chia/ Soh Wooi Yik, Johnnie Torjussen took a game off Ng Tze Yong. Tomorrow will be another tough battle for England against Japan.
