Carolina Marin wins an unprecedented sixth consecutive European Championships crown.

The Spaniard successfully defended her European Championships crown for a fifth consecutive time. It is all-the-more special as the tournament marks her comeback from another career-threatening injury. Out of competition for almost an year and having missed the Tokyo Olympics, Marin entertained her home crowd throughout the week. She bested one opponent after another to claim a record-breaking sixth consecutive title.

The 28-year-old had her easiest-ever victory over familiar opponent Kirsty Gilmour. Pumped up by the ecstatic home fans, she won 21-10, 21-12 in 42 minutes. In doing so, she extended her record over Gilmour to 8-2.

- I played better today in the final. It is not easy to control in front of these amazing spectators at home. I took all the energy and power they gave me during the match, and wanted everyone to enjoy me on the court.

Record-breaking performance
She now has one title more than the Danish legend, Peter Gade in the singles categories and equals Gillian Gilks for the most number of titles in one category. Moreover, she extended her record for the longest-time to have retained the crown. It is almost unbelievable that the last winner in the women’s singles category was Tine Baun, who retired almost a decade ago.

- I feel extremely happy, but it’s not about winning the gold medal today. Being able to come back and playing my first tournament of the season is bigger, Marin made clear her priorities and long-term goals.

What’s next?
The lioness is ready to take on more fancied opponents now that she is back. The likes of Akane Yamaguchi, An Se Young, Tai Tzu Ying, and Chen Yufei have to watch out for the three-time world champion and former Olympic champion, as she aims for further glory.

- I needed to improve my game and play some matches to gain confidence. I could do that in this tournament, she revealed.

- I will enjoy this big story with my team, friends, and family right now. On Monday, we start again, Marin was determined.

- I try to remain calm and confident. I tell myself that I can do it, she concluded.
