The Germans were third-time lucky as they reached their first-ever European Championships final as a pair.

Mark Lamsfuss/ Isabel Lohau shrugged off many disappointments to seal their place in the final: the bronze medal finishes in 2018 and 2021, the recent German Open loss to their opponents, and one game deficit today. The Germans lost the opener 21-12, but came back strongly to beat Mikkel Mikkelsen/ Rikke Soby 21-16, 21-17 in 58 minutes.

- We were struggling in the first game, but found our rhythm. We told ourselves to fight in the second game. It doesn’t have to be beautiful badminton, Lohau underlined.

- Our opponents played really well and we were not very confident. However, we knew we could win even if we couldn’t play our best, she continued.

Gicquel/ Delrue fulfilling their promise
The young pair of Thom Gicquel/ Delphine Delrue is definitely one of the best in Europe and they are delivering this time. The Olympians are one match away from realizing their dream of a European Championships gold.

They eased past Robin Tabeling/ Selena Piek today. The French controlled the proceedings and led throughout the match to win 21-19, 21-15.

- We had done some training with them some time ago and knew the tactics. We started well and were leading. That gave us confidence and we’re really happy, Delrue beamed.

The stage is set
As Gicquel/ Delrue seek the biggest title of their career, Lamsfuss/ Lohau will also give it their everything.

- We will play it like a normal match, not thinking too much about the circumstances, the Germans said.

- We will relax, enjoy today’s victory, and prepare for tomorrow. We are going for the gold, the French were positive.
