The 2022 European U15 Championships that were due to be held in Lahti, Finland, in February have been postponed.

Covid-19 has unfortunately caused another tournament to be postponed. The Badminton Europe Board of Directors, together with Badminton Finland, has decided to postpone the 2022 European U15 Championships and not play it alongside the 2022 European Men’s & Women’s Team Championships in Lahti in February.

- It is of course extremely disappointing that we have to postpone the 2022 European U15 Championships. The decision to postpone has been taken for safety reasons, to reduce the number of athletes in Lahti, due to the ongoing and currently escalating pandemic. We know that our U15-players have been looking forward to the event, but we need to consider the safety of the players – and with this measure, we believe it is safer for everyone, Badminton Europe Deputy General Secretary, Jimmy Andersen, said.

The European U15 Championships have since 2014 been played alongside the European Men’s & Women’s Team Championships, giving the chance to the young talents to play alongside their idols – on the same courts with the same setup. This will unfortunately not happen in 2022 where the team event will be played alone in the Finnish city of Lahti.

- We look very much forward to the event in Lahti, and we shall do our utmost to organize yet another good and safe event together with the dedicated organisers in Finland, Jimmy Andersen stated.

- It will be a challenge that we look forward to – but with the postponement of the U15-event, we feel we are able to make it even safer for the elite players, and that is a clear priority to us.

It is not yet known when or where the European U15 Championships will be held in 2022, but it is of utmost importance to Badminton Europe that the event will be held later in the year.

The 2022 European Men’s & Women’s Team Championships will be held 15-20 February in Lahti, Finland and is the official qualification event to the Thomas & Uber Cup Finals 2022. The entry deadline for the event is tomorrow, Tuesday 14 December, and the entered teams will be announced later this week.
