New name, same location, and just as many world-class players. The Hylo Open 2021 kicks off tomorrow and this busy autumn doesn’t seem to have taken the energy out of all the players just yet.

Formerly known as the SaarLorLux Open, the Hylo Open is taking place once again amid what is being a hectic run of tournaments. Still, some of the world’s best have gathered in Saarbrücken, Germany, to score even more important wins.

Singles
Fierce matches are guaranteed from the get-go in the men’s singles category. Top seeded Chou Tien Chen played a thrilling three-game encounter against Kanta Tsuneyama and got the runners-up spot after a tough loss. The strong Chinese Taipei player will be facing Loh Kean Yew, this year’s Dutch Open champion.

Centre of Excellence player Felix Burestedt will have the world number 10 Wang Tzu Wei as his first opponent, while Brice Leverdez, who gave quite a show to his home crowd at the French Open last week, will be facing Ng Ka Long. Max Weisskirchen could get a similar push from the crowd at this German event in his opening match against Sourabh Verma.

A player that did not seem to need any extra motivation was Clara Azurmendi at the Denmark Open, where she reached the quarterfinals after beating Mia Blichfeldt. Her first opponent in Saarbrücken will be Lianne Tan. Blichfeldt is set to play against Neslihan Yigit. There are more all-European clashes to look out for, such as that between Kristin Kuuba and Jordan Hart, or Yaelle Hoyaux and Line Højmark Kjaersfeldt.

Another Centre of Excellence player will be looking to make it to the next round of the Hylo Open tomorrow. Martina Repiska will be facing a tough start against number three seed Michelle Li. Yvonne Li will also have a North American opponent for her first match, Iris Wang, incidentally a good friend of hers.

Doubles
German powerhouses Mark Lamsfuss/Marvin Seidel will have to defeat the younger pair of Christopher Grimley/ Matthew Grimley to cheer their home crowd. Fellow Scots Alexander Dunn/ Adam Hall have a good chance against one of the three English pairs in the category, Matthew Clare/ Ethan Van Leeuwen.

Daniel Lundgaard/ Mathias Thyrri, who lost the event’s final last year to Danes Jeppe Bay/ Lasse Mølhede, will also be facing a Danish pair, Joel Eipe/ Rasmus Kjær, in their opening match for this year. Frenchmen Lucas Corvee/ Ronan Labar will be playing against Fajar Alfian/ Muhammad Rian Ardianto, who reached this year’s French Open semifinals but lost against Marcus Fernaldi Gideon/ Kevin Sanjaya Sukamuljo, the runner-ups of the same tournament.

Reigning champions Gabriela Stoeva/ Stefani Stoeva will meet the young talented Indonesian pair Siti Fadia Silva Ramadhanti/ Ribka Sugiarto. The host country’s top women’s doubles pair, Linda Efler/ Isabel Lohau, will be facing Spain’s best Clara Azurmendi/ Beatriz Corrales.

Chloe Birch/ Lauren Smith, who won silver in the 2019 edition of this same event, will have Chisato Hoshi/ Aoi Matsuda as their first opponents. Ukraine will be represented by youngsters Mariia Stoliarenko/ Yelyzaveta Zharka who have secured some impressive victories last year on the European circuit and will be facing Ashwini Ponnappa/ Reddy N. Sikki.

Last year’s runner-ups in mixed, Mark Lamsfuss/ Isabel Lohau, will be playing against Tang Chun Man/ Tse Ying Suet, who almost got hold of the bronze at Tokyo 2020. Ronan Labar will again play with Australia’s Gronya Somerville.

With a partnership that surprised many, the duo managed to put on quite a fight at this year’s French Open against the silver medallists, Mathias Christiansen/ Alexandra Bøje. The successful Danes will face Yang Po-Hsuan/ Hu Ling Fang in their first encounter.
