Following the Badminton Europe (BEC) Board of Directors meeting you here get the latest update on Badminton Europe and the BEC activities.

#ECC21 cancelled - #ECC22 host found

The 2021 European Club Championships was due to be held in Bialystok, Poland from 21-25 June 2021, but due to the COVID-19 situation the fans will have to wait another year: Poland will be hosting the event in 2022

2021 European Senior Championships cancelled

Due to the current COVID-19 situation, the BEC Board of Directors has decided to cancel the 2021 European Senior Championships.

BEC staff is back in office
As of Monday 10 May, the BEC staff returned to the BEC Office in Brøndby, Denmark.

The staff has been working from home with one-two weekly days in the office for the past months, but due to less COVID-19 restrictions in Denmark, the staff has now been able to return.

Memorandum of Understanding
46 out of the 54 BEC Members have signed the Memorandum of Understandings (MoU) with BEC.

The MoUs have proven to be a useful basis of discussion and understanding between BEC and the Members and it allows an individual and detailed follow up approach.

BASIS Programme

The next activities related to the BASIS Programme are scheduled to take place during the 2021 RSL BEC Summer School, with a Shadow programme and a Membership Exchange Programme.

Sustainability Project – Erasmus+
The BEC Development department is in contact with the European Hockey Federation to participate as a partner in the European Erasmus+ project “SAS – Sustain and Support”.

This project is currently under preparation and aims at a broad understanding and implementation of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UNSDG) in sport organisations. 


RSL BEC Summer School

87 players and 28 coaches for the Coach Education Level 2 course have signed up for the RSL BEC Summer School and a reserve list has been made.

The BEC office is monitoring the COVID-19 situation in Slovenia and are in regular contact with the Badminton Association of Slovenia.

Shuttle Time Trainers/Tutors course
A course was held in Kiev, Ukraine from 7-9 May 2021, the week after the European Championships.

Coach Education Level 1 and Tutor Education Level 1
Due to the low number of registered participants, the BWF/BEC Coach Education Level 1 and Tutor Education Level 1 Courses scheduled on 14-17 June and 18-20 June 2021 have been postponed.

 

The new suggested dates to deliver these courses will be announced soon.

Regional Projects
11 projects applied for support through the Regional Projects programme. Two of the projects are focused on Para badminton and two other projects are focused on female players.

All 11 Regional Projects were approved.

Umpire assessments
This year‘s two umpire assessments towards the BWF Accredited level will take place at the TOTAL BWF Thomas & Uber Cup Finals and the VICTOR Denmark Open.

Coaching session for BEC Certificated umpires
A coaching session for BEC Certificated umpires was organized at the 2021 European Championships where umpires were coached towards a potential assessment towards the BWF Accredited level.

The BEC Circuit is back 

Since late March 2021 four BEC Elite Circuit tournaments (Polish Open, Portuguese Int. Championships, Slovenia Int. and Austrian Open) have taken place.

 

The Junior (Ukraine Junior) and U17 players (Polish U17 Int., Spanish U17 Open, Spanish U17 Int. and Polish U17 Open) have also had the chance to enter one or more tournaments so far in 2021.

 

In June tournaments are scheduled to take place in Lithuania, Spain, Bulgaria, Latvia, Serbia and Austria.

 

As of 28 May, 15 Elite Circuit tournaments have been cancelled or postponed, which is the same situation for 15 Junior Circuit tournaments and eight tournaments on the U17 Circuit.


BEC Junior Circuit Tournament Grading 

In order to follow the update of the BWF regulations, the BEC Junior Circuit Tournament Grading (which defines the Junior tournaments who are eligible for an up- or downgrade in the following season) was updated and approved from 2022 onwards. Since it was estimated that a total of 35 BEC Junior Circuit tournaments will be organized in 2022, those tournaments will be divided and graded as below:

  • 2 Junior International Grand Prix 
  • 4 Junior International Challenge
  • 27 Junior International Series
  • 2 Upgraded Junior Future Series


Centre of Excellence (COE)

It is now easier to enter Denmark for players from abroad. More players are coming to COE and players from other Continental Confederations are planning to go to COE to prepare for the Tokyo Olympics.

BEC Certificated Training Centres (CTCs)
The ten BEC CTCs have all got their certification renewed for 2021.

ADVANCE – project
The needs analysis is in process and is expected to be finished by the end of July 2021.

A survey for coaches and interviews featuring educational managers, current and former players will also be conducted.

All the information will be used to build and develop the Badminton Coaching Framework, the Badminton Coaching Education programme and also the online European Coaching platform.

Development & High Performance webinars
Six webinars have been delivered so far with more to come in the upcoming months.

The Development & HP department is still in the process of finding out the best way to handle the preparation of the webinars, rehearsals with the speakers, delivering the webinars and getting as many participants as possible. All webinars are published on the OTT.

YONEX agreement prolonged
The BEC Board of Directors approved the contract prolongation with YONEX to 2022.


YONEX will continue as the BEC major events partner, which secures a top professional venue setup and best possible support of the players at the European Championships.

New website
The development of the new BEC website will soon begin, and it will be driven by the Communication department. The website is expected to air in the second part of 2021.
 
BEC Manager
The BEC Manager app will be delivered ultimo September to be launched just before Thomas & Uber Cup, Denmark Open and French Open.

New staff member
Through the European Union Volunteer project, Sara Gonzalez Martinez has joined the BEC office.

Two new European faces on BWF Council
Nine Europeans were elected onto the BWF Council. Two of them will be joining for the very first time. 

On 22 May 2021, the BWF members were to elect the new BWF Council at the Annual General Meeting. 20 vacant spots were to be filled and seven of the spots were for European candidates.
