The Spain Masters has just begun and today it’s all about doubles as the pairs kickstart the six-day tournament that has already seen some powerful players take the lead.

In the southern Spanish city of Huelva, the Sports Palace Carolina Marin has already seen the action of some badminton stars in the first hours of the tournament as the first clashes start to take place. International events like this one are much appreciated due to the logistic difficulties brought by the pandemic of assembling such tournaments.

Still, everything is going as planned. Today, badminton fans have gathered once again in front of their screens craving to witness legendary matches, and the players have so far shown that they are ready to go all the way to the finals. Men’s and women’s doubles opened the championships, with some big names already making their way on to the next stages.

Smooth start of the tournament for Astrup/Rasmussen
Coming from a podium finish at the 2021 European Championships, clinching bronze in the semifinals after a close call against Mark Lamsfuss/ Marvin Seidel, Kim Astrup/Anders Skaarup Rasmussen took on their first clash of the Spain Masters facing Jose Molares/Jaume Perez.

The Spaniards were playing on home soil, a little push they could have used to their advantage after a not-so-lucky start of the year for them at the Portuguese International Championships. It was expected to be an uphill battle for them, as they were facing no other than Europe’s number two men’s pair.

Despite the Spanish duo’s efforts that saw them seriously pushing for points in the second game, Astrup/Rasmussen won the match with no major difficulties with a result of 21-7, 21-9. Denmark could not earn another win with Emil Lauritzen/Mads Vertegaard after a tough three-game match against the Indonesian pair Putri Kusuma Wardani/ Yeremia Erich Yoche Yacob Rambitan.

The first hours into the tournament also saw some of France’s biggest names fighting on court. Lucas Corvee/Ronan Labar faced Scottish brothers Christopher Grimley/Matthew Grimley and despite the latter hitting back at the more experienced French pair in the second game, the clash earned France a win.

Matching energy between opponents in women’s doubles
The German pair of Annabella Jaeger/Stine Küspert seemed to have got off to a great start in the beginning; however, Kate Frost/Moya Ryan were ready to strike back. In the first game, the Irish caught up with the German pair 10-10, and from there it was a close call in the next points.

It was a fierce fight in which both pairs gave it their all demonstrating energy and skills that eventually led to the German’s winning 23-21, 21-11. In an all-around Spanish clash Clara Azurmendi/Beatriz Corrales and Nerea Ivorra/Claudia Leal delivered a similar affair with a close head-to-head at first that saw, in the end, the more experienced run away with a win.
