Shuttle Time: Fresh ideas and new friends

The Shuttle Time tutors/trainers course came to an end last Sunday, but the experience is far from over as the participants return home with considerable knowledge.

This year, the Shuttle Time tutors/trainers course took place in Kyiv less than a week after the big European Championships. All instructors and participants gathered at the Kyiv Racket Sports Club for a hree-day program of new and exciting ideas from 7-9 May.

An exchange of inspiration and experiences
There were 13 participants from different parts of Europe — Azerbaijan, France, Italy, Kosovo, and Ukraine — who met in Ukraine with a common aim: a desire for bettering badminton in their own countries, the perfect way to strengthen our sport all around the continent.

Despite the difficulties posed by restrictions and the current situation due to COVID-19, the course was a success, as all participants got to enjoy an enlightening course that will surely help them develop their own Shuttle Time programmes in their own countries. Badminton Europe’s Development & High Performance Officer Justine Cammal praises the hosts, the Ukrainian Badminton Federation, and how beneficial this course will be for the different countries and everyone involved

-Thanks to the Ukrainian Badminton Federation, we were able to witness first-hand the active development of Shuttle Time in the country and they shared their motivation and experience with Federations wishing to start in their home countries, like Kosovo and Azerbaijan, Cammal explained.

But how did the participants feel? It seems the general response was just as positive, with the whole group having a good time not just in purely educational terms with the more technical aspects they have learnt, but also taking the opportunity to share tips with their fellow European colleagues and establish new and fruitful relationships that have even led to genuine friendships.

-It seems to me like all the participants went home with new friends in the badminton world and fresh ideas and knowledge to develop and grow badminton in connection with schools, Cammal said.

A push for new initiatives
Participants will therefore be equipped with the necessary tools and information to further develop Shuttle Time courses in their home countries, which will result in fostering the talent of upcoming stars and, as a consequence, have a distinctly positive impact in the badminton communities at a local, regional, and national level. Chiara Vanda, one of the 13 participants that went to Ukraine all the way from Italy, knows the advantages Shuttle Time can have on teachers, clubs, and learners.

-The time has come through Shuttle Time to open the doors in schools by training teachers who can make links with the clubs on the school territory and create the right connection between sport and opportunities.

By improving training, the bond between sport and opportunities will certainly be as strong as it can be, as Vanda argues. The Italian participant is ready to get things moving in her country. After a period of uncertainty around organising such courses, they have been given the green light to deliver a Shuttle Time course just next month.

-In Italy, two distance learning dates have been concluded due to the pandemic and fortunately, in June, we will be able to provide a course with more than 30 participants from all over Italy. It will be the first step to restart this year with enthusiasm, Vanda said.

Kyiv’s 2021 Shuttle Time course finished just a couple of days ago and there are already many new ventures set in motion that are just around the corner, a vital push for change, improvement, and fresh ideas that badminton in Europe needs.
