European Champions in 2017 and 2018, Chris and Gabby Adcock, were lining up a shot at equalling the all-time mixed doubles record of three titles in a row at the upcoming 2021 European Championships, but it was not to be.

The 2021 European Championships are due to take place in Kyiv, Ukraine from 27 April to 2 May. The mixed doubles category will now be without the holders and world number 14 pair.

Chris and Gabby Adcock were part of the England team securing qualification in December 2020 for the 2021 European Mixed Team Championships which took place in February. In a post-match interview at Milton Keynes, Gabby Adcock shared her excitement for spending some downtime over Christmas before a big 2021.

-It has been a long time since we have been able to be home for Christmas. I think it will be the first time in maybe six years, so we will definitely enjoy just being at home with our dog and have a relaxing one.

-Hopefully, tournaments can go ahead in January. It has been a tough time for everyone, so we need to keep ourselves focused and do what we can, Chris added looking towards the new year.

Long Covid
Unfortunately, despite their best-laid plans, Gabby Adcock tested positive for COVID-19 in December. The pair subsequently was forced to withdraw from the Asian leg in January and more recently their home tournament, the All England Open, due to the aftereffects that Gabby is still suffering from.

Unfortunately, Gabby Adcock is still not recovered in time for the biggest European event of the year – the 2021 European Championships. Speaking with BBC Sport, she stated that she is not ready to compete with her husband Chris if she is not in the right condition to win.

-That's what I want to do, go into tournaments knowing I can win. I still cannot smell anything; I'm looking forward to getting this back. I am just very grateful my health is on the way up.

These very unfortunate circumstances cast significant doubt on their Tokyo Olympics qualification hopes. Commenting on this, Chris Adcock says.

-Every athlete would like to go to an Olympics but it's about what's doing right health-wise and there's no point pushing just to get there when you don't know what detrimental effect that could have.
