Cynthia Mathez beats Belgium’s second seeded Man-Kei To, with the performance of her career today at the Dubai International

WH1 women’s singles is becoming the place to go if you’re looking for shocks, upsets, surprise winners and epic performances. Who can forget when Germany’s Valeska Knoblauch burst onto the global scene with a 28-26 third game gold medal win, against Swiss world conquering Karin Suter Erath at the last European Championships.

Top seed this week, Suter Erath may have her work cut out for her in the Wheelchair Class 1 women’s singles in Dubai, as teammate Cynthia Mathez aims for top spot in Group B with a 21-19, 21-12 win over world number nine Man-Kei To.

In the absence of the top four ranked players in the world, it is looking likely now that one of these Swiss players will have their hands on the Dubai 2021 title.

‘’I am proud of myself today!’

We spoke with Cynthia Mathez after today’s performance, who had this to say about the match

- I practiced a lot over the past 12 months, and I am feeling very strong both physically and mentally at the moment.

- I was nervous going into this match against Man-Kei To as she has always been a strong player! Today was amazing and I feel proud of myself for the performance. I am not usually proud of myself, but today I can say that I am, she added

We asked Mathez what is was like to be competing again and how things are going in Dubai, she said

- the situation here is Dubai is good, the organisation is good, I love coming here. The conditions are difficult as there is a lot of drift in the hall that we must manage to control somehow.

- I am so happy to be here competing, after one whole year without tournaments. I have missed my friends from around the world, so it is great to be back!
