Gustav Bjorkler/Edith Urell upset second seeds Aaron Sonnenschein/Leona Michalski to set up a quarterfinal against Egor Velp/Elena Filippova. Despite trailing in most of the second game, they saved a game point to beat the Russians in straight games, 21-13, 23-21.
- Maybe we are the surprise package here. We played two good matches today. It was important to get straight victories in both of them.
- I focused on one match, one point and one rally at a time. It worked. We are very satisfied with the medal but we will be ready for the semifinal tomorrow, Bjorkler said.
They will play Christo Popov/Flavie Vallet for a final spot.
Popov and Vallet have their first medal
After easing past the third seeds Marcus Rindshøj/Mette Werge 21-19, 21-15, Popov/Vallet had a tough quarterfinal match. After being thrashed 21-9 in the opener, they made a strong comeback against the Russians Egor Kholkin/Regina Galiakhmetova to get over the line 21-18, 21-13.
- In the first game, we lost badly in the net battle. We didn’t have many chances to attack. That made the difference. We battled more at the net in the second game and Flavie played very well. It was a very tough game. In the third game, they made easy mistakes when it got close and we played even better. Physically, I think we are pretty well.
