Second seed Amy Tan from the Netherlands wins a close match against Julie Franconville from Switzerland and secures a spot in the quarterfinals.
Tan had a by in the first round and then a walkover in the second, so her first match at the Juniors was today against Swiss Franconville.
- It feels great after waiting so long especially when I had a bye and walkover but also after seven months. This is my first tournament and I am really excited, Tan said.
The Dutch won the first game 21-10, but in the second game Franconville was ready and took it 21-17 sending the match into a third game. It was a tough last game where the two players gave everything they had and, in the end, Tan could walk off court as winner as she won the last game 21-18.
- The first game went quite well, but after that she started to play better so I was struggling a lot. Third game was just a battle of who could run the longest, Tan said.
A great opportunity
Tan practices at the Centre of Excellence in Denmark together with many other European players from different countries. Putting some words on how the CoE has helped her improve, she said.
- I want to thank Badminton Europe and the Dutch federation for this great opportunity. I think it helped a lot to improve my game and deal with a lot of pressure since the senior women play with a lot of speed.
In the quarterfinal Tan will face Nella Nyqvist, the 2020 European U15 Champion in women’s singles. Sara Loncar, who lost out to Nella earlier today, said this about her after their match.
- I made many mistakes, but Nella is very good for her age, Loncar said.
