In just under two weeks, the Denmark Open 2020 will begin. With some of the top nations not participating, a lot of European players have suddenly got the chance to play with the big stars. 

In men’s singles, three Danes are seeded. Anders Antonsen is third-seeded, Rasmus Gemke seventh and Jan O Jorgensen is seeded eight. For Jorgensen, this could be his last tournament, as he retired from the National Centre in Denmark back in June. 

The young French talent, Christo Popov, will also play in Odense and in the first round he will face Lakshya Sen, another young talent, from India. 

In women’s singles, third seed Carolina Marin, and Mia Blichfeldt, seventh seed, are the only seeded Europeans as Japan takes up four out of eight seedings. Danish Line Christophersen will face her compatriot Line Højmark Kjærsfeldt and whoever wins that match, will most likely face the reigning Olympic Champion, Carolina Marin, in the second round.

The doubles

With five men’s doubles pairs from England and seven pairs from Denmark, they fill out more than a third of the draw. But like the women’s singles, Japan also takes four out of eight seedings in the men’s doubles. The other four seedings go to Denmark, England, Germany and Russia. In the draw, there are a lot of debutants for a Super 750 who for sure will bring everything they got and go all in.  

In the women’s doubles, we will see the French pair of Emilie Lefel and Anne Tran back on court together for the first time in a year, as the last tournament they played was the French Open 2019. Just as in the women’s singles and men’s doubles, Japan brings three strong women’s doubles pairs taking up seeding one to three. 

In the mixed doubles, we will see the two strong English pairs of Marcus Ellis/ Lauren Smith and Chris and Gabby Adcock seeded second and third. Both of them will face a German pair in the first round. From Denmark, we will see two pairs who will have their first international debut together as there were some partnership changes in the mixed doubles a couple of months ago. Niclas Nohr/ Amalie Magelund and Mikkel Mikkelsen/ Rikke Søby will walk on court for the first time together in an international tournament at the Denmark Open 2020. 

CoE going to Odense

Several players from Badminton Europe’s Centre of Excellence are going to Odense in week 42 to play the Denmark Open. Felix Burestedt will be the only men’s singles player from the CoE playing the tournament, and in the first round he will face eight seed Jan O Jorgensen. 

In the women’s singles, we will see Irina Andersen, Katerina Tomalova and Martina Repiska in action. None of them will have an easy first-round as Andersen will play Evgeniya Kosetskaya, Tomalova will play eighth-seed Aya Ohori and Repiska will face seventh seed Mia Blichfeldt.
