Axelsen told fans that everything went well, and he hopes to be back on court soon.

Many players have spoken about using this pause in the tournament calendar to get back up to full fitness. This means topping up their strength and conditioning with full training blocks, but also to address any long-term injuries they may have been carrying on tour.

Axelsen, the 2020 All England champion, is unfortunately, no stranger to injuries that have impacted his seasons. He has therefore decided to get one that has been bothering him finally sorted. As he explains on social media.

- My right ankle has been nagging me on and off for some time now. After consulting with several experts and physiotherapists, I decided to go through a minor ankle surgery today.

Back on court soon
As we all know, player’s ankles go through a lot of strain in badminton and injuries are quite common. Most notably seen when teammate, Anders Antonsen, rolled his ankle in the semifinal of the All England this year against Chinese Taipei’s Chou Tien Chen, preventing an all-Danish men’s singles final.

Axelsen, 26, reassured his fans after his surgery in Copenhagen by adding.

- Everything went well and there is no doubt that this was the right thing to do. Thanks to the professional staff at Hvidovre Hospital who helped me today. Take care guys, I’ll be back soon on court again.

Top-level badminton has been absent since the All England, which Axelsen won, ended on 15 March. Therefore, the Denmark Open, scheduled 13-18 October, will be the first tournament on the World Tour after the break. A tournament he would love to win on home soil. However, this surgery puts heavy doubt on his participation.
