Following the entry deadline yesterday, 33 teams have entered for the team event of the European Junior Championships 2020.

The European Junior Championships is an event for U19 players organised by Badminton Europe. Players must be born in 2002 or later. Considering the additional challenges faced this year for large sports events, it is pleasing to record that entries are just one shy of last year.

The 2020 event will be played from 29 October - 7 November in Lahti, Finland at the Pajulahti Sports Institute. Both a team event and the five individual events are played during the 10 days long competition.

Will it be a French treble?
The current double European Junior Team Championships gold medallists, France, will be present to try and hold onto their crown. At the last championships in Tallinn two years ago, the final went down to the wire against Denmark.

XD – Arnaud Merkle/ Juliette Moinard (FRA) bt Sebastian Grønbjerg/ Amalie Magelund (DEN) 22-20, 14-21, 21-19
WS – Line Christopherson (DEN) bt Leonice Huet (FRA) 21-13, 21-16
MS – Arnaud Merkle (FRA) bt Magnus Johannesen (DEN) 21-19, 21-8
WD – Amalie Magelund/ Freja Ravn (DEN) bt Leonice Huet/ Juliette Moinard (FRA) 21-12, 21-8
MD – Kenji Lovang/ William Villeger (FRA) bt Sebastian Grønbjerg/ Mads Vestergaard 21-10, 21-9

France bt Denmark 3-2

France was victorious in both 2017 and 2018, so will be determined to make it three in a row. This is a feat achieved only by Denmark before them. For Denmark, a traditional badminton powerhouse it has been a seven-year wait for the team gold. If they come up short again, it will be the longest gap without a win since the golden German generation between 1999 and 2003.

For the players, the European Juniors marks a significant stepping stone in their careers, giving them an opportunity to announce themselves in European badminton. We will get to know which players will represent their country on 27 October.

The seeding for the team event will be announced on Friday 18 September 2020.

Entries for the individual event must be made online no later than Tuesday 6 October 2020.
