Mariya Mitsova is ready to improve her game and to aim even bigger in the near future.

One of the close races for the Tokyo Olympic Games is the race between the two Bulgarians, Mariya Mitsova and Linda Zetchiri. A few hundred points have been between the two countrymen throughout the qualification period, and as we speak Mitsova lead the race against Zetchiri.

The younger ones believe that she can make it to Tokyo.

- It is definitely a tough situation with no clarity for the near future but my goal is of course to qualify for Tokyo and become the best possible player version of myself. To be honest I have not thought about the Olympics as my final destination – it is more like a place I would really love to pass through my journey, Mitsova said.

- I think I have the possibility to still improve a lot in my game.

Not leaving home
Within the last two years we have seen European players leaving their home country to try to find new ways to practice and to improve, but Mariya Mitsova is not one of them. She will for sure be staying in Bulgaria.

- I was brought up by parents who have quite a patriotic ideology in life so I guess I kind of have that from them and I do not feel like I can thrive anywhere else than my home country, she stated.

- I have tried it before and it definitely did not work for me.

Tough draws
In 2019 Mariya Mitsova won the Hellas International in women’s singles and mixed double while she finished runner up in Bulgarian Open losing to Neslihan Yigit (Turkey).

In 2020 Mitsova has had some tough draws facing strong Japanese opponents in three out of three tournaments before the COVID-19 situation put the international badminton circuits on hold.

Mariya Mitsova is currently ranked number 71 on the women’s singles world ranking.
