Things got very tight indeed in group eight in the men’s event this afternoon. A surprise, well-fought 3-2 victory was recorded by Bulgaria over the then group leaders, number eight seeds, Spain. The deciding match was won by Peyo Boichinov and Stilian Makarski, after the emotional victory, they said.
-It was really a pressure match. We gave a really good fight in the doubles, and a great win from Dimi (Yanakiev) in the singles, we are proud of him. We are so happy because we have a chance to get a first place in the group.
Bulgaria’s fate lay in Italy’s hands, who were at the time playing Croatia. Commenting on this odd feeling, they said.
-Actually, we still feel that we should have done the job earlier, when we played Croatia. But of course, we will be happy if Italy beat Croatia. This is our chance to get out of the group, if not, then it will be Spain. We will be watching it now.
The Italians delivered a gift for the onlooking Bulgarians by defeating Croatia 4-1. Meaning that Bulgaria advance due to their win against Spain earlier on.
